Juriy Mikhailovich is a neurosurgeon at the city hospital. His day consists of operations, examinations, and attempts to arrange quotas for patients. Every day he announces scary diagnoses to people and hears, as if they were praying for mercy, their questions about chances of having even the slightest bit of hope.
He is haunted by one terrifying image – of a man doomed to live his life motionless as a «vegetable». He has to observe these unlucky people every day. It looks like he is saving their lives, but he understands that he only makes their death take longer. It’s unbearable for him to think that this could happen to him. So he says to his girlfriend: «If something happens to me, kill me! Just inject 400 units of insulin into my vein and that’s it! If you love me– kill me!»
